I was born in 1953 on the island of Trinidad and Tobago and grew up in a family of music. My father was a musician which influenced me intensely. At the age of 11, I sang in the church choir and my father taught me basic fundamentals of music which established my musical foundation.
At the age of 14, I started playing the guitar and six months later was playing well enough to join the church band. The listened to artist like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Mongo Santamaria and guitarist Wes Montgomery.
At the age of 17, I formed my first band and we played a variety of music focusing on Soul, Calypso and Latin. Two years later my brother Clive came back from England and revolutionized the jazz scene in Trinidad. He formed the Guyap Music Workshop together with Jazz legend Scofield Pilgrim. This was the place to be if you was a visiting Jazz musician. In 1979 I had the pleasure of attending a workshop session conducted by the late Grover Washington Jr. where he was inspired to record the album Reed Seed.
In October of 1979, I migrated to the United States, and have lived here ever since. I spent most of my early years playing in jazz clubs and playing R&B and Caribbean music. In 1989, I retreated to the confines of my basement and devoted my time to study and composing. I still found time to play with a Caribbean group. Attending the sessions at the Guyap Workshop really contributed to my ability to compose and developed originality in my guitar playing.
Today, I am working with the Momentum Smooth Jazz quartet which I enjoy very much. In 2006, I was the opening act for jazz pianist William Green at the Villa Christina 107.5 jazz series.
